The Seismic Hazard Center (CPS) is an INGV’s unit, funded in 2013, that coordinates and conducts seismic hazard studies and assessments for Italy, contributing to the National Civil Protection System. Our mission is to provide essential information for reducing seismic risk — that is, for ensuring the safety of people, buildings, and infrastructure.
The CPS collaborates with national and international initiatives and institutions such as: CSEP - Collaboratory for the Study of Earthquake Predictability, GEM - Global Earthquake Model Foundation, GEM, Fondazione Eucentre and ReLUIS - Rete Laboratori Universitari di Ingegneria Sismica e strutturale.
The main activities of the CPS include:
- Research and development of innovative methodologies for seismic hazard assessment
- Production and updating of seismic hazard models
- Technical and scientific support to the competent authorities in seismic code regulation
- Outreach and training on seismic hazard and risk topics
