On 27 February, INGV hosts the first meeting of the ISHM project launched by the Seismic Hazard Center (CPS).
The Istituto Nazionale di Geofisica e Vulcanologia (INGV), through its Seismic Hazard Center (CPS), has launched a project of strategic importance for the development of the new Italian Seismic Hazard Model (ISHM). The initiative represents a key step toward strengthening national activities aimed at seismic risk mitigation and updating the scientific knowledge needed to support territorial planning and risk management.
On 27 February 2025, the Kick-Off Meeting of the project will take place at the INGV headquarters in Via di Vigna Murata, Rome. The meeting will provide an opportunity for discussion among CPS researchers, INGV experts, and the broader scientific community involved in the development of the new model. The event will be accessible both in person and online.
The day will begin with a presentation of the activities of the Seismic Hazard Center, followed by an overview of previous national seismic hazard models. This will be followed by an introduction to the main objectives of the ISHM project and to the key scientific topics that will guide its development.
The program includes several presentations dedicated to seismicity modeling, including the update and completeness of the earthquake catalog, the integration of different types of seismicity, the development of three-dimensional models, area-source models, and fault-based models, as well as contributions from geodetic approaches and volcanic areas.
The final part of the meeting will focus on an international perspective on seismicity modeling methodologies and on the main developments achieved in other national and regional projects, including ESHM20, the New Zealand seismic hazard model, and U.S. initiatives related to earthquake rupture forecasting. The day will conclude with an open discussion involving all participants.
Participation in the meeting represents a valuable contribution to the development process of the new national model and to the collaboration among the different scientific and technical communities involved.
